Db2, SQL, and Open Source Languages on IBM i

October 24, 2018/0 Comments/in Db2 for i, IBM i, Open Source, Web development /by Alan Seiden

db2 sql open source ibmiPresentation Handout

The ever-expanding capabilities of Db2 for i can simplify development in open source languages such as PHP, Ruby, Node.js (JavaScript), and Python. These languages, known for their effectiveness in building web and mobile applications, can tap into the power of SQL.

So why complicate them with repetitive code that distracts from their power and simplicity?

IBM’s Db2 for i Business Architect, Scott Forstie, and I put our heads together to present our top suggestions for optimizing Db2 access in open source initiatives. In “Db2, SQL, and Open Source Languages on IBM i,” we explore several techniques that make it easier for open source developers to work with IBM i data.

The presentation handout shows how to reduce tedious coding by using such Db2 structures as:

  • Views
  • User-Defined Functions
  • Global Variables
  • Stored Procedures
  • Row and Column Access Control (RCAC),
  • LIMIT/OFFSET
  • exciting new IBM i Services

Follow these recommendations to enhance security, performance, and ease of maintenance for open source scripting languages.

If you’d like to explore DB2 for i best practices for your environment further, just let us know. We’re always happy to help.
